Breaking Barriers

For over a decade, I’ve built my career in spaces where women were rarely seen, let alone leading. From the high-stakes world of poker to the elite, tradition-bound corridors of private golf clubs, I learned that success in male-dominated industries isn’t just about talent—it’s about commanding respect, building influence, and knowing how to play the game.

Lesson 1: Confidence is Built, Not Given

Many women wait to feel “ready” before stepping into leadership. But in high-performance industries, confidence isn’t a prerequisite—it’s a result of taking action, learning through experience, and proving (to yourself first) that you belong.

👉 Action Step: Instead of waiting for permission, take one bold step forward today. Speak up in meetings, advocate for yourself, or pursue an opportunity outside your comfort zone.

Lesson 2: Mastering the Power Dynamic

Success in male-dominated spaces requires more than skill—it requires an understanding of influence and perception. In poker, I learned to read the room, anticipate needs, and quietly observe from the shadows. In golf leadership, I learned to assert authority without seeking approval. It starts with believing in the vision and staying focused on the process.

👉 Action Step: Observe power dynamics in your workplace. Who holds influence? How do they command attention? Learn from them and apply those lessons to your own leadership approach.

Lesson 3: Building Strategic Allies

In industries where networks matter, your allies can be your greatest asset. I didn’t rise in these spaces alone—I cultivated relationships with mentors, advocates, and key decision-makers. The key? Positioning yourself as a valuable asset while remaining authentic.

👉 Action Step: Identify one key person in your industry who could support your growth. Reach out, get involved, and start building a relationship.

Final Thought

Breaking barriers isn’t about waiting for the industry to change—it’s about owning your power, mastering the game, and making yourself undeniable. If you’re ready to step up, I challenge you to start today.
